iPhone Commeth
So, they finally announced the iPhone coming to Canada. I know, I read the announcement on my iPhone (which I’m using in Canada). The funny thing is – and here comes the geek in me again – it is still exciting to me. This phone is so amazing and far superior to any phone I’ve ever owned, that I am excited to see it arrive in Canada. Finally, I will be able to get accessories in my local stores.
Since I bought my phone, I’m amazed at how it’s changed how I do some tasks. My laptop has been relegated to very limited use (although I am starting to turn to it more often again). Email, web surfing, YouTube, etc. has all been done on my phone. It’s that quick and nice an interface.
I know some of you are thinking, “It’s just a phone!” A number of years ago, Apple revolutionized how we listen to music with the iPod and iTunes. The same is going to happen with cell phones. Wait and see.
Why Macs Rock!
Okay … I’m back home and almost caught up on everything!
I came across this article in a news blog today and think it’s awesome … another reason why I love my Mac computers!
A remote-desktop access feature found in some Macintoshes is being credited with leading police to two suspects in the burglary of an apartment in New York.
In addition to flat-screen TVs, iPods, and DVDs, the thieves made off with two laptops, one of which belonged to Kait Duplaga, an Apple store employee, according to a report in The New York Times on Saturday.
While police in White Plains, N.Y., were coming up empty with their investigation, Duplaga learned that her computer was being used on the Internet, and she turned on the Back to My Mac feature installed on her Mac from another Mac, according to the report.
The feature allowed Duplaga to see immediately how the computer was being used at the time, as well as operate it remotely. Recalling that she had a camera installed on the computer, the fast-thinking Duplaga snapped images of one of the burglary suspects before he realized what was happening, according to the Times. Duplaga showed the image to friends, who recognized the suspect as someone who attended a party at the apartment.
The photo led police to arrest two suspects on Wednesday and recover nearly all the stolen property.
“It doesn’t get much better than their bringing us a picture of the guy actually using the stolen property,” Daniel Jackson, the deputy commissioner of public safety in White Plains, told the newspaper. “It certainly made our job easier.”
The Back to My Mac feature, which runs on Leopard-based Macintoshes, requires a $99 subscription to the .Mac online service.
Biker Geek
Okay, I admit it, I’m a geek. I’m sitting in my home office right now, and I have to laugh. I have a 20 inch iMac with a secondary 22 inch screen beside it. I have two external hard drives connected to it. I also have
an Airport Extreme Base Station with another drive connected to it. My 30 GB iPod is currently syncing with my iTunes library. Beside the iPod are two smaller external hard drives that I’m not using. At my feet, in a laptop bag, is my MacBook. Downstairs, connected to my television is my AppleTV (which is also currently syncing with iTunes). I just finished configuring an Airport Express with my network so that I can play my iTunes library wirelessly into my bedroom. My Blackberry buzzes whenever I get a new message. On top of all that, Heather has a MacBook Pro, Brittany has a MacMini, and Christina has an old PC desktop (that I would love to get rid of and replace with another Mini).
Yup, I’m a geek.
I’m also a biker. I have a beautiful 94 Harley Davidson Dyna Wide Glide sitting in the garage. When I fire it
up, something leaps within my heart. There are very few things that I enjoy more than jumping on my ride and hitting the open highway. It sits beside Heather’s Yamaha Road Star which is in pieces right now while she paints the bike.
Many would have a hard time connecting the two: Biker & Geek.
And yet, the more I get to know people, the more I realize how unique each person is. It’s very difficult to put labels on people. To categorize them. To define them by a specific type of person. Well, let me correct myself. SOME people are easy to categorize. They lock themselves into a pre-defined image of what they are supposed to be like, and rule out any other experiences.
The people I find interesting – the one’s I like to hang with – love a wide variety of experiences.
I remember reading an article about Indian Larry a few months after he passed away. For those who don’t know who that is, Indian Larry was one of the premiere bike builders the world. His work was respected by everyone. He died doing a stunt on one of his motorcycles.
According to the article, Indian Larry – this “biker’s biker” loved classical music. He would drive others nuts because he would turn it up really loud while working on a bike.
Bikers and classical music. Another thing you wouldn’t think to put in the same sentence.
How are you unique?
UPDATE: Now I’m also the proud owner of a iPhone … it just gets worse!!
